Square Pegs in the Ceredigion Art Trail

Square Pegs are delighted to be taking part in the Ceredigion Art Trail, a 10-day open studio event happening all across Ceredigion and including artists in St Dogmaels and Newcastle Emlyn, from 22nd-31st August.  WE ARE NUMBER 57 IN THE ART TRAIL BROCHURE.

“I’ve had a perfectly wonderful evening, but this wasn’t it,” said Groucho, having watched Square Pegs – Carole King, Glenn Ibbitson, Chris and Annie Coombs, Yvette Brown and Steve Thompson – posing for photographs outside Nant Studios. You are warmly invited to pay your respects to Groucho at Nant Studios, Pantybwlch, Newcastle Emlyn, where Square Pegs will be hosting an exhibition of their work and where Glenn and Carole will be allowing people to invade their studios and make remarks about general levels of tidiness.     Yvette Brown, Annie Coombs and Steve Thompson will also be making guest appearances throughout the 10 days and will be available to eat cake with you and to talk about the weather or their work.  Two pieces of cake will be awarded to the best Groucho moustache of the day. Visual Intrigue at Artstream Gallery

'Maps and Codes' is a themed exhibition which explores the use of symbols to interpret the landscape. Hidden images are revealed using ultraviolet blacklight and messages are coded using flowers. Poppy seeds recreate the lines of the WW1 trenches, roads, hedges and chromatography patterns.

An artist chooses how to reveal some aspects of the world they see while deliberately obscuring or cryptically encoding others. Some codes and symbols are fairly clear, for example, those appropriated from ordnance survey maps to create abstract landscapes; others may include signs made from details of objects, which might not immediately be clear to a general public, but would be immediately apparent to anyone associated with, say, the woollen industry.

Carole has been mapping the landscapes of West Wales, re-interpreting aspects of its industrial and social past through paintings and original prints. Because her technique shuttles between fine art skills and traditional domestic crafts the works reflect a free-ranging, intuitive quality, as rigorously organised as a quilt design.

I used to pass this door nearly everyday when on my way to my studio when living in Chertsey, Surrey. The 'New Chertsey Art Club' had taken over what had been the council offices in Guildford Street and this shop was in the same block. All were awaiting demolition, which finally came, but the six years we had this magnificent old building were great fun and a lot of fantastic work was produced here- both in the studios and in the life room-previously the architects drawing office with overhead windows and fabulous light.

Aberglasney Arches

The beautiful house and gardens at Aberglasney are in Carmarthenshire, Wales. While exhibiting in the gallery here I had time to wander around these wonderful surroundings  and find inspiration for more paintings. Whilst there I made several drawings of the many arches and gateways in the gardens as well as the flowers both in the gardens and the orchid house contained within the old kitchens and rear of the house
 This arch leads up some steps, under the raised walkway, from the courtyard to the formal walled garden.

Collage and Tunnel Books

Bringing Home the Catch

This little painting in 3 dimensions was sold today at my show- Layers Leaves Petals Paper, in Cardigan.
Inspired by by the views through the windows of cottages in the fishing village of Staithes  and up narrow alleys this series of works all have the common idea of a view, partly hidden or glimpsed through someone else back yard.
Their small size keeps them secret and intimate.

Nine Lives- The Teifi Artists Group at Art Matters in Tenby

Members of the Teifi Artist Group have exhibited individually with Art Matters at the White Lion Street Gallery in Tenby for many years. Each time we visit it is a real pleasure to be met with with a smile by John or Margaret, sometimes both and made to feel so special. This time we  are showing as a group.

The gallery is always a  delight to visit with a monthly change of main exhibition accompanied by smaller spaces full of work by their carefully chosen  group of artists. They have work on many themes but they say the majority is landscape because 'thats what they bring us'. There is a whole selection of artists original prints- (they don't do reproductions) with work by national and internationally renowned printmakers.
The TAG group formed a long while ago to provide mutual support for those involved, for discussion, networking and cake.They occasionally exhibit together. In April we will be presenting a personal selection of pieces from nine of the members, inevitably showing the diversity of talents and interests within the group.

Stored in a box made from the buildings floor boards and locked.

Memories of others, stored in photograph albums, passed through generations, un-named, undated become generic triggers for events, places and times in our own family histories

The interaction between the landscape and its people created commercial enterprise: ultimately leaving memories, industrial archaeology and working industries

To work cotton efficiently it was necessary to maintain a high temperature, above 20°C (68°F) with high humidity (up to 85%), obtained by keeping all windows tightly shut. Before 1833 there was little ventilation in the Mill.

The theme of interaction between landscape and man regularly occurs in my work:

The landscape itself holds a rich mixture of ideas to be mined; layers of manmade and naturally occurring features, combined with evidence of human settlement, industrial, social and political history.

Experimental layered collagraph prints, inspired by random, small sections of ordnance survey maps have grown to larger, more involved pieces, which incorporate recycled ordnance survey maps and pamphlets documenting local geology, combined with original print.

Some pieces use an intricate collage of field shapes, cut and assembled together which follow the pattern of lanes and hedges. Each field shape is cut from a section of collagraph printed onto a previously printed paper- creating a complex surface of lines, symbols and colour variations. Other pieces, use rectangles and triangles joined together, using decorative stitching, in a traditional Welsh patchwork quilt pattern.

The cartographers interpretation of the landscape as a two dimensional representation is precise and factual, each element previously defined by convention, yet seen as a whole these pieces become aesthetically pleasing in their own right - these 'quilts', also incorporating additional information are equally visually seductive .
