Aberglasney Arches

The beautiful house and gardens at Aberglasney are in Carmarthenshire, Wales. While exhibiting in the gallery here I had time to wander around these wonderful surroundings  and find inspiration for more paintings. Whilst there I made several drawings of the many arches and gateways in the gardens as well as the flowers both in the gardens and the orchid house contained within the old kitchens and rear of the house
 This arch leads up some steps, under the raised walkway, from the courtyard to the formal walled garden.

'Infinitely Nine &' from the Teifi Artists Group

Nine Lives- The Teifi Artists Group at Art Matters in Tenby

Members of the Teifi Artist Group have exhibited individually with Art Matters at the White Lion Street Gallery in Tenby for many years. Each time we visit it is a real pleasure to be met with with a smile by John or Margaret, sometimes both and made to feel so special. This time we  are showing as a group.

The gallery is always a  delight to visit with a monthly change of main exhibition accompanied by smaller spaces full of work by their carefully chosen  group of artists. They have work on many themes but they say the majority is landscape because 'thats what they bring us'. There is a whole selection of artists original prints- (they don't do reproductions) with work by national and internationally renowned printmakers.
The TAG group formed a long while ago to provide mutual support for those involved, for discussion, networking and cake.They occasionally exhibit together. In April we will be presenting a personal selection of pieces from nine of the members, inevitably showing the diversity of talents and interests within the group.

Each print located on a plan.

Stored in a box made from the buildings floor boards and locked.

Memories of others, stored in photograph albums, passed through generations, un-named, undated become generic triggers for events, places and times in our own family histories

Images inspired by the weaving industry

The interaction between the landscape and its people created commercial enterprise: ultimately leaving memories, industrial archaeology and working industries

To work cotton efficiently it was necessary to maintain a high temperature, above 20°C (68°F) with high humidity (up to 85%), obtained by keeping all windows tightly shut. Before 1833 there was little ventilation in the Mill.

The theme of interaction between landscape and man regularly occurs in my work:

The landscape itself holds a rich mixture of ideas to be mined; layers of manmade and naturally occurring features, combined with evidence of human settlement, industrial, social and political history.

Experimental layered collagraph prints, inspired by random, small sections of ordnance survey maps have grown to larger, more involved pieces, which incorporate recycled ordnance survey maps and pamphlets documenting local geology, combined with original print.

Some pieces use an intricate collage of field shapes, cut and assembled together which follow the pattern of lanes and hedges. Each field shape is cut from a section of collagraph printed onto a previously printed paper- creating a complex surface of lines, symbols and colour variations. Other pieces, use rectangles and triangles joined together, using decorative stitching, in a traditional Welsh patchwork quilt pattern.

The cartographers interpretation of the landscape as a two dimensional representation is precise and factual, each element previously defined by convention, yet seen as a whole these pieces become aesthetically pleasing in their own right - these 'quilts', also incorporating additional information are equally visually seductive .

Two exhibitions start this week- one in Carmarthen 'Borrowed Landscapes and Stolen Histories' ( more about this later) and 'The Big Picture' at White Lion Street Gallery, Tenby.
John and Margaret have traditionally gathered a fabulous assortment of small pictures for the festive season- this year they have gone in completely the other direction and requested 'big' pictures for their xmas exhibition.
How big is big depends on your usual output, they casually explain- which leaves it somewhat open to our own interpretation.

In Residence- Nant y Coy Arts

We are off to Nant y Coy Arts at Treffgarne Gorge  for our third week at this wonderful location. It gives us a great opportunity to work immersed in the landscape without the usual interruptions. Its always great to meet new people and talk with them about working techniques and our work in general.
Anyone in the area is welcome to join us for the day - there is a cafe on site and lots of fabulous landscape from which to find inspiration.

Welsh Icons - Malcolm Gwyon

Welsh icons, from the worlds of sport and music are portrayed in vivid colours and and a sense of fun in Malcolm Gwyon's new show, at Theatr Mwldan in Cardigan, Wales.

Malcolm uses textures composed from daffodils, drip patterns, maps, dots and areas of textured paint to produce his very individual approach to this subject matter. First glances might suggest a simple image, digitally produced, however closer inspection reveals details created with the silhouettes of birds or an unusually Welsh tattoo.

The National Library of Wales have already purchased his work and 'Aneurin' usually hangs in our house. He has a strong local following and sells his work throughout Wales.

Ffin y Parc gallery, Llanrwst latest show opens tomorrow afternoon with this uncompromising exhibition about human trafficking. The human body is depicted, confined in a packing case, as it moves around the space in attitudes of desperation and despair. 

Read literally or metaphorically, the compound effect of the human figure in torment, can not fail to impress

What the artists says:

“Consignment is an ongoing multi-media project comprising paintings, prints and film. The work developed from an initial theme of escapology into a meditation on the contemporary social environment. The composition of the figure physically enclosed within the confines of the frame, was chosen for its universality; it suggests simultaneously both cell and refuge or hiding place. It is employed here as a visual metaphor for the individual as the object of:

1 political oppression; the suspension of human liberties and the enforced submission of the individual.

2 human trafficking. The high risk strategies employed in acts of global transmigration, either voluntary or coerced, place people in situations of extreme endurance; conditions into which they are willing to place themselves and/or others, in the vain hope of improving their economic circumstances.

The paintings and prints are all square in format, with dimensions ranging from 10cm to 92cm, and have all been painted and designed to hang any way up.

The short film: “Consignment”, accompanies the exhibition and has a running time of about 5 minutes.

Bluebells

At the beginning of last year I had a request for a painting of bluebells- possibly in and oval format.The bluebells weren't out at the time and I needed a few references and a really good look at the sort of areas where they grow. Our trip up to Ulverston and the Lake District for Printfest at the beginning of May gave me just the opportunity I needed.

The woods were filled with a soft blue haze, dappled spring sunlight and the perfect opportunity for information gathering. This is the resulting painting and there are several others on the easel awaiting completion- I haven't painted an oval version yet but perhaps the circular one will do...
